Three Times Lucky Cover
Here is a cover that I did for Dial, a division of Penguin Young Readers Group. It is for a story called Three Times Lucky by Sheila Turnage which is about a young girl named Moses Lebeau in search of her real mother in a small North Carolina town that is being investigated for a murder. The editor didn’t want to stress the death angle but focus on both the message in the bottles that Moses Lebeau sends downstream in search of her real mother and the town’s quirky cast of characters. Here is the final cover image which includes the front, back and spine of the book.
Many ideas where given before we arrived at the final cover illustration. These are some of the preliminary sketches that included the town people and the cafe where much of the story takes place. Some of the later sketches were developed until near finals until they were abandoned for a better solution. I’m thrilled with the end result and enjoyed working with the art department from sketches to finish. I can’t wait to see the cover on the shelves in 2012.
